So the folks from the hobby store I bought this crappy budget ECX Torment 2wd from told me that the most likely cause was a stripped gear and sure enough they were correct.
Here is a photo of the stripped gear...you can clearly see the build up of black plastic on the motor spur where the teeth of the main gear have been stripped off. The part is apparently $2.99. That is fine, and the hobby store is sending me another one, but I don't really get why it happened. The budget truck was barely driven twice.
The flattened teeth on the main gear can be seen here. I cleaned the mess up and await the part's arrival.
